First-Frost Installation: Cold-Weather Adjustments You Forget Until November

By late September in the northern markets, you're 3-4 weeks from your first sub-40°F install. The transition catches teams off guard every year.

Adhesive temperature

Most epoxies need 50°F+ to cure properly. Heat the cartridge in your truck cab on the way to the job. Pre-warm the seam area with a heat gun before applying.

Slab thermal shock

A slab moved from a heated truck to a cold garage can crack from thermal stress. Acclimate slabs at the install site for 30 minutes before handling.

Caulk and sealant

Switch to cold-weather formulations starting October 1. The summer SKU goes brittle below 45°F.

Crew gear

Insulated gloves with grip — cheap insurance against dropped slabs. Foot warmers for the 7-hour install in an unheated new construction.

Customer setup

Ask the customer to have heat on at the install site. "It's 38° in the kitchen" is the answer no installer wants to hear at 7am.
